Important Freeze Alert – Pool & Equipment Protection Instructions from Aloha

Aloha!

With freezing temperatures expected, Aloha Swimming Pools wants to provide important instructions to help protect your pool, spa, and equipment from freeze-related damage. Please read the following information carefully and follow the steps that apply to your pool system.

Pools with Automation Systems & Freeze Protection

If your pool is equipped with an automation system that includes freeze protection:

  • Ensure the system is powered on and connected to electricity.
  • Do not turn off breakers, timers, or automation panels during the freeze.
  • The freeze protection feature is designed to automatically turn the pump on when temperatures approach freezing.
  • Confirm that the pump is able to run continuously during freezing conditions.
  • If you notice error messages, alerts, or abnormal operation, please contact us immediately at 832-528-4979.

Pools WITHOUT Freeze Protection

If your pool does not have an automation system with freeze protection:

  • Run the pool pump continuously (24 hours a day) for the duration of the freeze.
    • You can do this manually or by taking the “off” timer trip off the timer.
  • Ensure water is circulating through all plumbing lines.
  • Leave valves in the open position to allow proper flow.
  • If safe to do so, running water features can help reduce freeze risk.
  • Do not turn the pump off overnight, even briefly.
  • Exposed plumbing may be insulated, but see safety notes below before doing so.

Fire & Equipment Safety – VERY IMPORTANT

To prevent fire hazards and equipment damage:

  • Do NOT place blankets, towels, tarps, or covers on pool motors, pumps, heaters, or electrical equipment.
  • Pool motors and heaters generate heat and require airflow; covering them creates a serious fire risk.
  • Do NOT cover or obstruct valves or valve actuators.
  • Valve actuators must be able to move freely during freeze protection cycles. Covered or restricted valves may cause system failure or damage.
  • If insulating plumbing, only cover pipes, and keep all electrical components, motors, heaters, and moving parts completely clear.

In the Event of an Extended Power Outage

If there is a power loss lasting several hours or longer during freezing temperatures:

  • Freeze protection systems will not operate without power.
  • If power is not expected to return promptly and freezing conditions persist, customers should take steps to winterize the equipment.
  • Turn OFF breakers to all pool equipment before performing any winterization steps.
  • Remove drain plugs from pumps, filters, heaters, and any other equipment designed to be drained.
  • Allow all water to fully drain from the equipment and exposed plumbing.
  • Leave drain plugs out until freezing conditions have passed (Pro Tip: Put them in a Ziploc bag).
  • Once power is restored and freezing temperatures have ended, equipment should be carefully inspected before restarting.
  • Do not start systems if there is any ice.
  • Do not restart equipment if cracks, leaks, or damage are visible—contact us immediately.

Please note that winterization during an active freeze and power outage may reduce risk but does not guarantee prevention of damage.

Important Texas Freeze & Liability Notice

Freezing weather, power outages, and utility interruptions are considered acts of God and are beyond the control of Aloha Swimming Pools. While we take reasonable precautions during scheduled service visits, we are not responsible for freeze damage resulting from severe weather conditions, power loss, equipment failure, or customer failure to follow the instructions above.

Customers are responsible for maintaining power to pool equipment and ensuring systems are properly set during freezing conditions. Repairs related to freeze damage are not included in routine service and will be billed separately.

Additional Notes

  • If you will be away during the freeze, please double-check your system settings before leaving.
  • If you are unsure what type of system you have or need assistance preparing, contact us as soon as possible at 832-528-4979.

Thank you for your cooperation and for trusting Aloha Swimming Pools. Taking these steps can greatly reduce the risk of freeze-related damage.
